A Soggy Day and a Swollen Willamette River

We decided to brave the rain and take the dog for a walk under the I-205 bridge this afternoon to see what the Willamette looked like. With all the rain we've been having lately, it was abnormally high, muddy and churning.

The stream was rushing down under the bridge releasing itself into the river... The dog was in mud heaven.

The old Oregon City bridge, in repair mode looked bleak and deserted.

The Willamette Falls, practically disappear in the high water.

The recently shut down Blue Heron paper mill just below the falls. Large logs and trees tumbled past on their way toward The Columbia.

It's all we can do to keep this guy out of the water. As it was, he was so wet by the time we got home, a bit of a dip wouldn't have mattered!

Several years ago metal sculptor and friend Linley Schetky asked me to work with her on a collaborative project sponsored by Art in the Pearl, here in Portland. I jumped at the chance because I love spending time with Linley, and I had already learned the basic welding and plasma cutting skills from her while helping her out in her studio.

We decided to do a life sized, or in this case, bigger that life sized figure which we named Flora Abunda. Made from steel rod and found objects and topped with a floral crown, she's currently residing at Lawrence Gallery in Sheridan, Oregon. She is looking for a home that can accommodate her. She eats very little. As you can see, she's not even skin and bones, just bones. And she has a very pleasant personality...

For me, working large, in steel was very freeing. After I got used to the idea that I didn't have to file and fit every joint to perfection before welding I found a whole new world of really being able to manhandle the material. I really, really want to do more of it!

Last week I finished the majority of my orders and this week I strove to make one new piece each day. Some of the work took several days, some could be completed in a single day. Thanks to a CD of music my daughter made for me I was able to saw, hammer and solder, and set all while rocking out to "mama mix". Thanks Caelen!

Had a wonderful show in the lovely home of clothing designer Ann Williamson. I think half the fun was seeing all of the beautiful clothing that walked into our show on the shoppers! I got a few photos in the morning right after set up just to set the scene! Thanks Ann and all for making it such a great weekend!

The entry featured one of Elisabeth Gillem's gorgeous outfits and the delicate forged silver jewelry of Bay area metalsmith Kathryn Ferrier.

Just a small selection shown here of Carol Risley's fabulous leather handbags.

Some of the amazing work of Ann Williamson, much of which is constructed using vintage kimono silks with hand applique and bead work.

I shared the dining room with designer Elisabeth Gillem and of course, ended up with one of her beautiful hand dyed silk scarves. How could I not?

And my little case was packed full of goodies as well.

Autumn's last gasp

Last night we had a pretty big wind and rain storm in the Portland area. I had just remarked at how pretty the Japanese maple looked this year. Seems like the red was extra intense, but then again I think I say that every year... Alas, that windy night did a number on the trees.

The back yard, where we have an old big leaf maple is carpeted in yellow. Bruce has that job, I cook.

LOCAL 14, Lake Oswego Arts and Crafts League is approaching it's 45th year. Once a year, in October, the women's art group puts on a big art show and sale at the World Forestry Center in Portland, OR. Three and a half days, and then it's over...
Now, for fans of the group, you'll be able to continuing shopping right through the Holidays. L14 is taking an empty storefront in Lake Oswego and turning it into The Art Spot pop up gallery! Things have been slowly coming together the last couple of days in preparation for our opening day on Friday. Painting is done, lights are being set and art is filling up the space at 1st and B Streets, Lake Oswego. It's like a concentrated L14 Show! Currently, gallery hours will be Wed - Sun, 11am -6pm. Dates are being set for a grand opening celebration. Please stop by if you're in the Portland area!

etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, The Finale

It's hard to believe that another season of Project Runway has come to an end... The etsymetal team has been following along, challenging ourselves weekly along with the PR designers. This week we learned who the Project Runway winner was.

Our final challenge was to create a mini collection. With only a week to design and execute, it was challenging, especially at this time of year when we are trying to fill orders, and get work to the galleries. Check out the etsymetal blog for all of this week's entries!

My goal was to put together a 3 piece collection using those materials I really enjoy working with such as Nevada boulder turquoise and pearls. I've also popped in a rose cut diamond on the pendant. All pieces are fabricated in sterling silver with 14kt gold accents. The cognac diamond is set in 18kt gold.

etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 12

Imperial jasper with carnelian drops in sterling and 14kt gold

For last week's Project Runway challenge the designers spent a day on NYC's Governor's Island, in search of inspiration for the creation of a mini collection. For the etsymetal challenge, we followed those same guidelines, using Governor's Island or a hometown park for our inspiration.

My neighborhood park, Maddax Woods, along the Willamette River is a constant source of inspiration and rejuvenation, not to mention our go-to dog walk destination... Goat Island, in the first photo, is a Great Blue Heron rookery. Flores is imploring me to hurry it up!

My challenge entry this week is a pair of earrings using a gorgeous pair of Imperial jasper in mottled greens evoking the cool understory along the path. The beautiful red band running through it reminds me of the Willamette river that borders the east edge of the park as well as the beginning of our Fall colors. The conical carnelian drops, echo that color perfectly!

Our final challenge will be to do a mini collection, just as the final 4 Project Runway designers are preparing to show their collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Stay tuned for that! Meanwhile check out the etsymetal blog with all of the current and past team challenge pieces!

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 11

Things have been pretty busy here lately in my little neck of the woods, and I've had to miss the last 2 weeks of the etsymetal Project Runway challenge. (You can find some cool entries from past couple of week's challenges on the etsymetal blog if you're so inclined...)

Last week's show "For the Birds" challenged the designers to create something inspired by one of these 4 birds brought into the studio.

And, as you can probably guess, the etsymetal challenge traveled along a similar flightpath...

I looked through my collection of stones and found a wonderful piece of ocean jasper with a colorful, graphic design. I set it in sterling silver with 14kt gold bits and a stylized "tail".

Next week's challenge: "The Final Challenge" . In this episode, the designers were tasked to create a mini collection emphasizing their overall fashion vision. They went to Governor's Island in NYC to find their inspiration.
The etsymetal challenge: create a piece inspired by the sights on Governor's Island. Or, visit your local park and pick up a little inspiration there.

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 8

In this episode, the designer's challenge was to design an outfit for a client's wife or girlfriend. Our challenge, at etsymetal, was to do the same, either by choosing a look from the episode to work with, or to ask a man to describe what his wife or girlfriend would like and design something for her. I took the easier path I guess, buy deciding to choose one of the outfits already designed and do a piece of jewelry to coordinate with that. My choice for this week was Anya's a-symmetrical dress...

I used a pair of Brazilian agates I had with the look of an animal stripe and paired them with golden coin pearls, picking up the warm golds in the belt or obi in Anya's design.

I made the earrings so that the agate drops can be detached and the pearls can be worn alone, or a-symmetrically, which was my intention while being worn with this gown.

In this episode, the challenge was to design a look for a member of an up and coming band, The Sheepdogs. It was a menswear challenge and an image/style challenge.

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 7

Last week's Project Runway designers teamed up to create a collection using their own fabric designs. The etsymetal team challenge was to create a piece of jewelry using pattern and texture.

I decided to create a line of sterling earrings that were big, simple shapes with small, interesting details. To begin with I used the rolling mill to texture the sheet with impressions from hand made papers. The earrings were given a bit of shape and details such as the repousee dots and sterling balls were added. Finally, the fine silver was brought to the surface through a heating and quenching process, giving the earrings a soft finish. (My current favorite technique!)

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 6

Last week's Project Runway challenge for the designers was to create an avant garde piece based on a collaborative painting done with a local art student. For the etsymetal challenge, I chose to create a pair of earrings to go with Victor's design, which again this week, was my favorite, and to try and incorporate a little bit of the feel of the student, Skyy's, painting.

While I certainly wouldn't call my earrings avant garde... I did have a pair of Nevada boulder turquoise that seemed to match the patches of blue in the dress so I went with that. I set them in sterling and added some 14kt gold elements to warm them up a bit. Their total length is 2 1/2" and they articulate at two points creating a lot of movement, just like the dress. On the back I've used repousee to create a simple spiral. Victor's dress had a lot of texture and I've added texture to the metal as well before bringing up it's fine silver layer through a heating and quenching process which creates a soft, satiny finish.

Even though I'm quite happy with the final product, I wasn't sure I'd get something completed for this week's challenge as I was constantly changing my mind. As it happened they were finished just in time to catch the last of the late afternoon's light in which to shoot them...

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were divided into two groups of five. They were given the opportunity to create their own unique textiles and asked to create a cohesive collection.

For Our Etsy Metal Translation:
Since this challenge was about pattern and texture, our challenge is to incorporate those into a piece. Do it however you like, etching, roller printing, drawing, or just fabricate a piece that forms a pattern or texture. Make it work!

etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 5

This week's challenge for the designers, was to create a collection based on Heidi Klum's designs for New Balance shoes. Their collection had to look good with tennis shoes... That was the challenge for the etsymetal team as well... See other team members designs here!

I found her collection a bit of a yawner, actually, but I'm happy with my design. I had Victor Luna's winning design in mind for this one.

All of the metal has been textured with a file and left in a matt finish. And I've had this huge lobster catch forever, never quite knowing what I would use it for!

etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 4

How to please Nina this week… If you’ve been following Project Runway this season, you’ll recall that last week the designers had to design something Nina Garcia could wear to work during the day and to industry functions in the evening. And Nina likes streamlined, modern looks. Can’t be boring either….

I decided to use a piece of petrified palmwood I had stashed away, in a very graphic black and white with polkadots to create a brooch. The shape, which measures 1 ½ x 5/8”, is a fairly conservative shape, but fits the streamlined criteria well. The simple design gives it a modern look, but the stone itself is bold and unusual.

For the back of the brooch, I’ve created a texture in the sterling reminiscent of reptile skin and added 14kt gold pin findings for an added touch of bit of opulence! Two little 14kt gold balls on either side are the only adornment needed to complete the look.

My idea was that it could be worn on a blouse at the throat like a collar bar or on a jacket, lapel, etc. Hey Nina, would you wear this?? Alas, we’ll never know, but someone will. Maybe with matching earrings? I have those too…

etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 3

This week's challenge was to "Go big, or go home". On Project Runway, episode 3, we saw the designers design for models on stilts. We were to think big in terms of jewelry and go a bit over the top of what is our normal m.o. You can see the over 20 submissions at: http://etsymetal.blogspot.com/search/label/Project%20Runway.

My piece uses a wonderful smooth piece of basalt from the Oregon coast, collected by my friend Grace Sheese before she moved away to her new life in Illinois. This big ring is for Grace, which is funny considering she is a little bit of a thing...

I've drilled holes into the rock and soldered pegs onto the metal which fit in nicely and along with epoxy, keep the ring together. On top is a little sterling starfish topped with a pink pearl. Very ocean-y and I hope it will bring Grace back to Oregon someday.

COMING UP NEXT WEEK...
In episode 4, the designers had to design something for Nina Garcia (if you watch the show, you'll know who I'm talking about...) Our challenge is to design a piece of jewelry Nina would wear. There is a scene where she is going through jewelry at Marie Claire, and in her conversations with the designers, she noted that she likes streamlined, modern looks... Yup, I already I know what I'm going to do. Stay tuned!

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 2

This is week 2 of the etsymetal Project Runway challenge! This week's challenge is called "My Pet Project"In this episode; the challenge was to create an outfit using pet store supplies. The designers were allowed to use some muslin as well, but were encouraged not to.  

For the EM challenge, we were asked to make a piece of jewelry using items from the pet store as well. We were limited to 30 minutes in the store and were allowed to use some metal in the piece, but only as little as possible.

There were 26 very creative entries this week, which can be seen here. Nice to know pet shops aren't just for pets anymore...

My dog and I took a stroll to our neighborhood Nature's Pet Market and picked up a few items that held some potential...

I thought I might be able to do something with these bright red poop bags, wildflower scented no less... which begs the question, why would you have a poop bag anywhere near your nose to begin with? And some colorful plastic cat toys that, not being a cat person, I'm not sure why these are attractive to cats...

At first I thought I'd just do something quick and simple.

But I "rethunk" and decided I needed to do something more in line with the spectacular potential of the red poop bags, and created another neckpiece that has the added benefit of really assaulting your sense of smell in a big and flouncy way.

Coming up: in this week's show, the designers had to design a piece for a model on stilts (!) and take part in an outdoor runway show.

Since the challenge was all about going over the top, this week's EM challenge is to make a piece that is BIG, over the top, larger and crazier than we would normally do, but still trying to keep it wearable and fashionable.

Etsymetal Project Runway Challenge, Season 9, Week 1

The etsymetal team's Project Runway challenge is a great way to get the creative juices flowing without having to experience quite the same amount of anxiety that the actual Project Runway participants are facing! This is the first year I've been a member of the etsymetal team and the first year I've joined the challenge. Hey, my youngest just moved out of the house last week, I feel like I might just have the time to devote to it!

I found a thick piece of aluminum that had been living in my scrap drawer for about 3 years, patiently waiting for something to happen...or not.
Cut, hammered and filed, then using rivets to attach a sterling back with a pinstem, creating a 4 1/2" long brooch. Very substantial, yet being aluminum, very lightweight.

Woodland Arrangement Workshop with Francoise Weeks

Francoise Weeks has made a name for herself in Portland as a premier floral designer. Her business, Francoise Weeks, European Floral Design is sought after by brides and non brides alike! Part of her business is teaching a variety of workshops ranging from creating your own personal wedding flowers to seasonal design workshops such as the one my friend Kelley and I attended last night, woodland arrangements.

Francoise is an enthusiastic teacher. It's easy to see how much she loves her work. After demonstrating her tried and true techniques and sharing some great tips, we were ready to get started... Even though I'm designing every day, it's something else to step out of your comfortable medium and apply yourself to something totally different like this!

There was lots of plant material, from bark and lichen and moss to live fern, berries and flowers to choose from.

Francoise's studio is spacious and easy to work in and does it ever smell great! Time just flew as we got going on our arrangements.

Five Fossil Coral Rings

Newly birthed from the studio are these 5 little fossilized coral rings. The coral cabs, measuring aprox 12-13mm x 17mm were too adorable to pass up, and they became sweet little littermates...

Each ring has it's own personality and is created from sterling silver with small 14kt gold accents.

Big Weekend

This weekend the much anticipated graduation of our daughter from Western Oregon University! With a degree in Elementary Ed that includes bilingual and ESOL endorsements she's accepted a job teaching English in Madrid, Spain for a year.

Congratulations Caelen, we're so proud of you! And thank goodness for Skype!

I'll get back to jewelry soon, but today I'm taking most of the day to prepare for my oldest daughter's graduation from college tomorrow. Cooking mostly and figuring out what I might have to wear that hasn't seen hard time in my studio! But I took the camera out because the garden is just looking so promising.

Clematis Nellie Moser has been abloom for weeks now and I see the hollyhocks are coming along nicely. An old peony that was here when we bought the house in the early 80's has a bloom. A branch from the Ginko is to the left. This is the side yard.

This old fashioned rose is called "Evelyn". It smells great! Also in the side garden.

My big, unruly peony in the front garden. Fantastic for cut flowers! The little purple flowers on the right are native orchids.

Mystery Peony

This is my earliest blooming peony. I rescued the tuber from a neighbor's yard prior to them laying sod over their flower garden several years ago. It's quite large as you can see from the next photo and has only ever produced 2 blooms for me. It's quite stunning so if anyone is a peony nut out there and knows the name of this beauty, I'd love to hear it!

3mm raw diamond cubes

It's been a busy Spring in my studio! The garden is finally looking good and I have a flat of lettuce and some flowers to get into the ground if the rain will just let up a bit. But, with all the rain we've been having it's been easy to stay inside and make stuff! I've been playing around a lot with raw diamond cubes ever since I bought some of them about a year ago to experiment with. I wanted to show some of the things I've been doing with them and also with my latest interest, rose cut diamonds. Still nice and rustic, but a bit fancier...

I really like the simplicity of a single cube set in 18kt gold on a textured or hammered, heavy sterling band.

The rose cut diamonds are flat on the bottom with a few polished facets on the top. Perfect to bezel set and adding a touch of luxury without sacrificing their rawness.

I've been paring the diamonds up with other sumptuous stones and pearls to create "Treasure Rings".

Spring has sprung

Walking around my sadly neglected yard today, I realized that we are well into Spring, even if there are a few hours of winter yet to traverse...

The hellebores have been blooming for a while but they're tucked away and often go unnoticed. Note to self: find a better spot for them.

The bulbs are doing their thing, happily without my help.

And the camellias are becoming quite showy

and the huckleberry will produce a crop for the birds again this year!

I have to say that I'm most excited to see all of the peonies have survived neglect and will be spectacular again this Spring!

I promised my yard that tomorrow, if it's not too hot and not too cold, and if it's not raining, and just as soon as I get the stones set in this pair of earrings I'm working on, and of course put off doing the taxes for another couple of days, I'll come out and pull weeds, trim branches, clear out the dead stuff and prepare the vegetable bed. I really, really will.

There's a farm supply store across the river from where I live and I like to go in there every now and then to poke around, especially in the Spring, to see the baby chicks. They have a display of little plastic animals, all types and sizes. Adorable. I couldn't resist buying a couple, they were so cute, and now every time I go in there, I add to my collection!

One day I decided to start making them earn their keep, and give me a good reason to keep buying them...

The Party Dress Book - Mary Adams

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Adams, author of The Party Dress Book, How to Sew the Best Dress in the Room, when she appeared at Ristretto Roasters, a very cozy little coffee shop in Portland, a week or so ago. Mary is a clothing designer living and working in New York City, but grew up and began her career here in Portland. I had pre-ordered her book at Amazon, wrapped it up and given it to myself at Christmas, and spent all of Christmas day reading through it! With a forward by Amy Sedaris, an enthusiastic customer, her story is interesting and will be familiar to artists in any medium.

The book is filled with sumptuous fabrics, ruffles, pleats, pintucks and layers and layers of color.

The inner spiral binding is a practical touch, much appreciated.

And if just being able to visually feast on the images in the book isn't enough, the final chapters are devoted to a tutorial in which you can create your own dress using the full size pattern supplied in an attached sleeve. You can take ideas and techniques from the book to create something quite unique, or use the pattern to go in a totally different direction.

This book is beautifully done and if it doesn't make you want to sew, it can provide you with raw inspiration you can take anywhere!

Spring dreaming

Living in the pacific northwest, we see signs of the approach of Spring much earlier then in my home state of Michigan. By the end of this month, I'll be cutting heavily budding branches off my white quince for forcing indoors and creating small bouquets of camelias for the table and the snow bells are already poking up. Yes, there's rain, but the color of that new growth just waiting to burst forth is a fair trade in my mind.

          I created this collection in appreciation of what's to come.
                                        I am so ready!

October and thus far November have been busy months for me. I've been spending a lot of time in my studio trying to replenish my inventory after the Local 14 show last month and working on a few commission pieces. I'm having a good time, but will have to emerge soon as the newest Harry Potter movie is now in the theaters! I'm hoping my 19 year old will come with. If not, it won't be the first time I've sat alone in the movie theater watching a Harry Potter movie!

I've had so much interest in my raw diamond ring, that I made another. This time using a pretty white stone, and narrowing the band a bit.

I like this ring very much. I call it a Treasure Ring. It's a piece of Hell's Canyon herringbone petrified wood, a keshi pearl, and a small raw diamond.

A smaller, simpler ring, with a gorgeous red rutilated smokey quartz set in an 18kt bezel.

Nevada boulder turquoise with enough rust in the matrix that adding carnelian drops was an easy decision!

And finally, another piece of the Nevada boulder turquoise, this time with a bit of a blush rather than the rust to it. A rather rustic piece, tamed a bit by the small pearl!

The Columbia Gorge

The "Mighty Columbia" as the river has been described in song is a bit calmer then when Lewis and Clark first encountered it or settlers tried to navigate it on their way to the fertile Willamette Valley. These days it's been tamed by dams. If you head out east on I-84 from Portland, in no time you find yourself in some of the most beautiful scenery (in my mind) you'll see anywhere! Especially the part of the river gorge that includes the Cascade range. This photo, shot by Wendy Dunder inspired me to babble on about one of my most inspirational places. Taken recently during a bit of stormy weather, it really conveys the majesty of this part of the Pacific Northwest.

You'll spot 620 foot Multnomah Falls within a half hour out the Gorge from Portland. My photo certainly doesn't do it justice...

The town of Hood River, about an hour East has world class windsurfing, Mt Hood ski areas in their back yard, and wonderful fruit orchards. The scenery changes at this point. You'll find yourselves in a much drier landscape. Head on out of Hood River to The Dalles where you can make a stop at La Petite Provence, you deserve it, after all, you've been in the car for about an hour and a half hyperventilating over the scenery. That will burn some serious calories!

It took a bit longer than I had hoped to dig into the batch of loose stones and pearls I blogged about several weeks ago, but then I dream about a week where I just work in my studio all day long without interruption... I've been able to finish 3 pieces using the Nevada boulder turquoise and the pillow keshi pearls. One of the rings, the large one, is a commission based on the smaller ring that I finished first. Both have pink tourmalines that pick up the bit of blush in the matrix of the boulder turquoise.

This is the largest stone out of the batch that I looked at as a possible brooch, but it makes a fabulous ring!

And another pair of the sterling and 14kt gold peach pillow keshi pearl drops.

For those in the Portland area, I'll be at the annual LOCAL 14 Women's Art Show and Sale Oct 14th -17th up at the World Forestry Center. If you've never been, you're in for a treat! Check out the website for more info!

A recent Sunday afternoon...

Recently my friend Louise called and asked if I might be interested in driving out to Joy Creek Nursery in Scappoose, Oregon to attend a free class on clematis given by Wim Snoeijer of The Netherlands. It was a beautiful, warm Indian summer day, Louise is an amazing gardner, plus she has a little red Mini Cooper. How could I resist?

We learned how to properly classify the various types of clamatis. I admit to not remembering a thing, except feeling a bit like I do when I'm at my French class... Anyway, we looked at lots of pretty blooms all of which I could see myself happily owning!

We took a little snack break after the class to give our brains a rest, found some shade and Louise unpacked a most wonderful spread including a variety of cherry tomatoes from her garden and pears plucked from her trees. She also made oatmeal cookies that were to die for. I think I ate 4 of them.

We enjoyed walking through the gardens admiring the various textures and colors, and of course, getting a few ideas for next Spring. I have no idea what the names of most of these plants are. I never seem to pay attention to that. I suppose I should try harder, but the visuals are what grab me.

How I Spend My Money...

Much of the time my inspiration begins with the purchase of some new stones. Today I bought more Nevada boulder turquoise, not that I don't have enough of it already but, well, my thinking is you can't have enough of the good stuff. I also recently purchased several more pair of peach pillow keshi pearls. It's a very sensous pearl and nice to work with.
So I thought I'd share my new little stash before running down to my studio with it and getting started on some new work! I hope to have some new pieces to post within a week. I work best on a deadline...

What about Mom?

So the kids are back in school, early morning routines re-established and mom gets to juggle work and school once again. Wow, mom is amazing isn't she? What can you do to show her how much you appreciate her? Aren't the Holidays right around the corner? I've got some ideas for you, and if you get started early, well, you'll have more time to enjoy that eggnog instead of running out to the mall for an uninspiring last minute gift...

Mother's Charms, since 1993, have been a popular choice for Mom! I'll be retiring all but the custom charms (bottom left) and my new initial charms (bottom right) due to the rising cost of producing them. But I still have quite a few available, along with a dog and a cat, for the mom who has everything!

Here's another idea, You have some wonderful drawings you child did in preschool or kindergarden. How about a brooch designed from one of those small masterpieces. Again, with the child's name and age, or whatever you like, on the back. here are a few examples...

These are all good things to get going on early, as they do take some time to complete.

My 15 Minutes!

Nathan Branch, a freelance communications consultant in Seattle,Washington, uses his website to write primarily about the global luxury and fragrance industries, and design in general. His writing reflects his interest and knowledge of those industries with the added benefit to the reader of a well developed sense of humor. Well, those crazy, lazy days of summer are over. Time to get back into the old routines. For me, that means it's time to put away the novels and pull out the French textbooks because it's back to French classes for me. I never really paid much attention to my French in High School, but I bet if I had, it would have been a heck of a lot easier... I have no gift for languages, and my head feels like it's about to explode after 2 hours in that class, mais je suis déterminé! Sigh, I just had to look that up.

Oregon Beach Agate Rings

Oregon has a beautiful, rocky coastline. The water is chilly, the scenery, gorgeous. A trip to the beach isn't complete without spending some time sifting through the small, tumbled rocks searching for agates. Translucent, in shades of orange, butterscotch, and white, they often end up in a little bowl displayed on a coffee table or mantlepiece. At my house, however, they ended up in sterling silver rings...

Thanks to my friend Ellie, who gathered these lovely stones for me while on one of her recent trips to unwind at the coast! Below is her ring, which became the protype for the above grouping.

Lotus Blossoms and Water Lilies...

On Friday, my good friend Kris, who is also a Master Gardener, and I spent a couple of hours in Portland's Classical Chinese Garden to see what was up with the lotus. The garden, in the heart of the city, spans an entire city block. Inside, except for some traffic noise and a high rise or two if you care to look, you're transported into peace and tranquility. Even though much of the flora is labeled, it was nice having a plant person along!

There were only a few lotus blossoms to see and they weren't in a place where you could get a close look, but we enjoyed our two hours immensely and vowed to make the short drive to Hughes Water Gardens the following Monday and get up close and personal with those beautiful blooms. If you're in the Portland area, and you've never been there, I'd recommend you get yourself out to Tualatin, it's worth it!

The place is beautifully set up and I'm guessing there are several acres with ponds, water features of all kinds and everything you'll need to make your own. Water plants abound, including huge South American lily pads and of course our quarry, the lotus.

I'm not sure which I love more, the flower, or the pod! It's no wonder the lotus is used so frequently as a design element...

Those amazing Victoria waterlily pads can hold the weight of a child. Found in South America, these pads are actually small in comparison to the 8' in diameter they can grow to. Kris,our lily pad princess, is demonstrating their strength. I was thankfully able to keep her from climbing aboard ...

You don't want to tangle with their undersides as they are extremely well protected by sharp thorns.

Many varieties of waterlilies, some outside and some inside the two greenhouses.

It's a beautiful stroll, and it's free! Except of course you may end up leaving with something beautiful for your yard. Personally, I lay in bed at night mentally going over my garden, wondering where I can fit in a cascading waterfall... I know Kris will be back to pick up a fountain she was eyeing...

Garden art by local metal artist, Marta Farris. I actually have several of Marta's pieces in my yard. Her work is very whimsical and colorful.

This must be how ants feel.

There's a large, looks natural, woodland pond with koi that are at least 18" long.

Hmmmm, I can see something of what Monet saw here...

It's a Surprise Party

Bonnie Taylor Talbot is one of those people who has the soul of an artist and it is evident in everything she touches. For the past 15 years she's been painting and perfecting her own unique voice. Her paintings are delightful. They're colorful, and full of her own brand of humor. She frequently travels to France and Italy, taking her paints and canvasses along, returning to her Portland Oregon studio full of new ideas!

Her studio is spacious and full of light, wonderfully cluttered with not only the paints and canvasses of her trade, but all kinds of little collections of bits and pieces that speak Bonnie. Lots of works in progress and projects being explored just for the fun of it. There’s a healthy dose of whimsy in everything she creates!

All of her pieces are done using cold connections, no welding involved. And everything is a one of a kind treasure.

Nevada Boulder Turquoise!

I buy this lovely material from my favorite stone dealer whenever she gets a batch in. I'm crazy about it! It's turquoise from Nevada, dug and cut by one particular guy and this pair is mostly matrix with a horizontal vein of turquoise running through it. I've built sterling bezels and added 14kt gold elements such as the gold balls placed at the edge of the turquoise vein on either side and the connection at the bottom and the bale of each pearl. The posts are also 14kt gold for added strength. The silver has been textured and oxidized and all the metal lightly sanded for a nice matte finish which contrasts nicely with the light polish on the tops of the stones.

Blue Lace Druzy Ring

I just finished this ring yesterday. It's a piece of blue lace druzy quartz with a lovely softly sparkeling top to it. I've set it in sterling silver which I then oxidized and lightly sanded which gives a lot of depth to the metal. This ring made it into my etsy shop. betsybensen.etsy.com
